Making Advance Market Commitments
work for Vaccine Development
Pneumococcal diseases kill more than 1.6 million people worldwide each year, including at least 800,000 children. Most of these deaths occur in the world's poorest countries. The most effective way to prevent these deaths is to ensure that all children have access to effective, safe and affordable vaccines. The Advance Market Commitment (AMC), launched last year by a group of committed donors, aims to deliver life-saving vaccines to children in the developing world faster and at an affordable price. This innovative funding mechanism stimulates vaccine makers to develop and manufacture vaccines for developing countries, who are thereby able to plan for immunization programmes, knowing that vaccines will be available rapidly, at a price they can afford and in the quantity they need.
